First Flush, Craft Bold, Batch Elite: Which Assam Tea Is Right for You?
Abelié Brew Journal
We get this question more than any other: which Abelie Brew tea should I start with?
It's a fair question. Three teas, all from the same gardens in Upper Assam, all single-origin, all small batch. From the outside, they might seem interchangeable. They're not.
Here's how to think about each one — and how to decide.
First Flush — for the curious and the light-handed
The first flush is the first harvest of the year, when the tea plant wakes up after winter and pushes out its newest, most delicate leaves. In Assam, this happens in early spring, and the result is a tea that's unlike the bold, malty character most people associate with the region.
Our First Flush is light, floral, and clean. The liquor is a pale gold. The flavour has a brightness to it — almost grassy, with a gentle sweetness and a finish that lingers without heaviness. It's the kind of tea that rewards attention.
Best for: mornings when you want clarity without weight. Drink it without milk. Use water at around 90 degrees and steep for no more than three minutes.
Craft Bold — for the everyday ritual
This is the classic Assam. Second flush, harvested at the peak of summer when the heat and humidity push the plant to produce its most characteristic leaves. Full-bodied, malty, with a deep amber liquor and a satisfying robustness that holds up well with milk.
Craft Bold is the tea we designed for daily life — the cup you come back to without thinking about it, the one that becomes a ritual. It's not subtle. It doesn't need to be.
Best for: mornings, afternoons, any time you want a tea that does its job without fuss. Works beautifully with milk. Steep at 95 degrees for four minutes.
Batch Elite — for the occasion
Batch Elite is different. It's a limited, carefully selected harvest that sits outside the usual flush categories — chosen for complexity and character rather than typicality. The liquor is darker, the flavour more layered, with notes that develop as the cup cools.
We produce it in small quantities, and when it's gone, it's gone until the next selection. It's the tea you open when you want to pay attention to what's in your cup.
Best for: evenings, slow weekends, or any time you want to taste something that rewards patience. Drink without milk. Steep at 95 degrees for three and a half minutes.
So which one?
If you're new to single-origin Assam tea, the honest answer is: all three. Not because we're trying to sell you more, but because the three teas tell a story together that none of them tells alone. You understand what makes First Flush special only when you've tasted Craft Bold. You appreciate Batch Elite more when you know what the valley's everyday character tastes like.
That's why we put together The Full Set — First Flush, Craft Bold, and Batch Elite in one collection, with free delivery across India. It's the complete picture of what Upper Assam can produce across a season, in one order.
